Secondary Teacher of the Year
Phillip “Ryan” Spears a Social Studies/AVID teacher at Rocklin High School, has been selected as Placer County’s Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Spears, who has taught in the Rocklin Unified School District since 1997 was praised by his superintendent, principal, and colleagues for his ability To effectively engage students in learning through hit with, humor, depth of knowledge and passion for bringing his subject to life.

Spears holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social studies and Rhetoric and Communications Degree from California State University Davis and an MA Educational Leadership/ Administrative Credential from National University.

Secondary Teacher of the Year
Cynthia L. Smith a 5th Grade teacher at Cobblestone Elementary School, has been selected as Placer County’s Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Smith, who has taught in the Rocklin Unified School District since 1998 was praised by her superintendent, principal, and colleagues for her abilities as a district leader in using data to improve instructional strategies and student achievement.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Iowa State University and a Multiple, Cross Cultural and Academic Teacher Credential.

An evening to celebrate the ten nominated countywide educators took place at Valley Springs in Roseville, on September 19, 2011. County Superintendent Gayle Garbolino-Mojica honored these outstanding teachers who are just a few of the over 3000 exceptional teachers in the county.

The annual event is the result of an extensive selection process. Nominated applicants submit several essays that reveal their personal qualities, their teaching philosophy, and their stand on current educational issues. The selection committee includes educators and two previous Teachers of the Year. Candidates progress from district selection to their county, where one is name Teacher of the Year and that teachers application is forwarded to compete at the state level.

Congratulations to the following Placer County Teachers who were also recognized at the reception as Teachers of the Year for their respective districts:
